Direct

Sources provide data from an actively managed source in the IT asset lifecycle. Examples are Active Directory or endpoint agents, These systems report the direct inventory of systems.

Indirect

Sources that log device activity or observe activity that implies a device’s existence but is an indirect measure. Examples include DHCP, ARP caches, and network scanners.
